Congratulations to Maggie Lim ’25 who has been named as a recipient of the Freeman-ASIA Scholarship and will be headed to Taiwan in the Fall to study abroad. The International Studies major, with Chinese and Political Science minors, and Naval ROTC member just recently returned from the Philippines as part of the Olmstead Expedition. 

Proudly presented by the Freeman Foundation, the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) strives to foster stronger ties between the United States and East Asia. By harnessing the power of education and institutions, the Foundation endeavors to elevate the understanding of Asian cultures, histories, and economies with the United States, while also promoting a comprehensive understanding of America and its principles among the people of East Asia. 
The scholarship provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, and books. This is the second different nationally competitive scholarship for study abroad recently won by a Norwich student to enhance their experiential learning opportunities. 

Cadet Lim has been extremely engaged during her time on The Hill. Currently, a Midshipman in Naval ROTC, she aspires to commission into the US Navy as either a Surface Warfare or Explosive Ordinance Disposal Officer. She has served as the Physical Training instructor for the Naval Battalion PT sessions. In the Corps of Cadets, Lim was a Platoon Sergeant for a Cadet Training Company, overseeing 30 incoming first-year cadets and three upperclassmen-level student Squad Leaders. This month, she served as one of the Communications Officers for the Olmstead 2024 Field Study in the Philippines.

Born in Jinhae, South Korea, Lim relocated to the United States at the age of 13. Already possessing bilingual proficiency and cross-cultural awareness, this educational opportunity will further bolster her understanding, cementing her position as an individual with rich depth and insight.
