The event will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, and will run from 9:25 AM – 10:40 AM in Mack Hall Auditorium at �����԰. The presentation will feature award-winning Russian photojournalist, Dmitri Beliakov, and a curated panel of subject matter experts (SME). Live streaming will be available.

From 2014 to 2019, Beliakov documented the conflict between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government with the goal of revealing all aspects of the armed conflict in the region. In 2005, he garnered the Overseas Press Club of America award for his 2004 coverage of the Beslan school siege terrorist attack.

Beliakov’s imagery explores the fanaticism that has driven the largest war in Europe in a generation, the transformative effects of the conflict on both the pro-Ukrainian government fighters and Moscow-backed armed separatists, and the tragedy of the most vulnerable – the elderly, the ill and the poor of the region.

The On the Margins of Europe event will feature a panel discussion, a slideshow of Belyakov’s photographs from 2014-2019, and contextualization of the current conflict in the region against the backdrop of the previous war.

Panelists at the event will include Dmitri Beliakov; Rachel Denber, Deputy Director, Europe & Central Asia Division, Human Rights Watch; Nathan Hodge, Senior Editor, CNN London; and Major Sergey Filippov, Commander, Kiev Volunteer Battalion.

Images featured during the presentation will be on exhibit in the Kreitzberg Library following the live event. The exhibit is hosted by the �����԰ Sullivan Museum & History Center and will be on display through March 30, 2023.
